Rick Weiland doubled down on his opposition to the Keystone XL pipeline Friday in a live Argus Leaderi nterview.
Weiland, the Democratic candidate for Senate, called claims about the jobs the controversial pipeline would bring to South Dakota "a bunch of crap" and bashed the project as an "export pipeline" that would carry oil from Canada to Gulf ports without benefiting U.S. gas prices.
"No jobs, no energy," Weiland said on the Argus Leader's "100 Eyes" web show. "There's all the risk and no reward."
It's an issue that puts Weiland at odds with the Republican frontrunner, Mike Rounds — a strong proponent of the Keystone XL pipeline.
"This is a great example of the difference between Rick and I," Rounds said at an August debate. "I am in favor of the Keystone pipeline, and I think it's got to be the first of several pipelines coming out of not only Canada but North Dakota as well."
Rounds said pipelines are safer than other methods of transporting oil — train or truck — and will free up railways for grain shippers.
Independent Gordon Howie also supports the pipeline, saying — like Rounds — that it would help make America less dependent on Middle Eastern oil.
"We should not be dependent for our energy on people who want to take our heads," Howie said in August.
Independent Larry Pressler says he's for more oil pipelines — but not the Keystone XL. Pressler says more pipelines should be built from North Dakota's oil fields to get that oil to refineries.
"What we need is a domestic pipeline in North Dakota ... that would relieve the pressure on our grain shippers," Pressler said at the August debate. "The XL pipeline doesn't do anything ... to get more rail cars and more big engines."
Rounds and the Republican Party have run television ads criticizing Weiland and Pressler for their opposition to the Keystone XL pipeline.
Weiland cast his position as an unpopular idealistic stand.
"It would have been a lot easier for me ... to just roll over and not take this one on," Weiland said Friday. "But the more research I did, I said, 'You know what? If I lose this election over Keystone, I know I'm not going to lose a night of sleep.' Because I'm going to speak the truth.

Rick sounds like a straight shooter to me. And being a neighbor to the east of South Dakota the pipeline concerns me, look at all the oil spills North Dakota has, and rail derailments too. Even though South Dakota is assbackwards in it's thinking, it is a beautiful state (Black Hills and Badlands) and the thought of the pipeline tearing through the state scares the hell out of me.

I enjoyed talking On the Record with Greta Van Susteren, and you can catch the replay of it later tonight. In discussing the response to Ebola, I made the point that every crisis will be capitalized on by a liberal federal government as an excuse to expand government authority. The Obama administration made clear early on that they abide by the Alinsky tactic to “never let a crisis go to waste.” The latest crisis has been drummed up by their incompetent reaction to the spread of Ebola. The purpose of any crisis for them is to ultimately exert more control over people as more Americans become fearful; the "solution" they'll offer will be another false big government promise: "Hey, little people, just give up more freedom in exchange for our promise of a little security!" Obviously with this Washington liberal M.O. we are losing both.
We do need to keep each level of government accountable. I agree with state governors who are filling this Obama leadership void and setting rules to tackle Ebola because the leader of the country cannot do it, and the 10th Amendment protects states rights in a case like this. But beware of allowing any level of government (especially the federal government) even an inch more power over the people. Liberals can turn that inch into the LAST mile toward statism. That's why politics must be excised from the Ebola issue, and the medical and scientific community must be listened to by the Obama Administration. They MUST put Americans first, and we must not buy into any hysteria as we calmly yet aggressively keep the Ebola virus out of our country.

Yeah like Sarah Palin really knows how to handle a crisis:
The title of today’s NY Times article on Sarah Palin could have been titled “Palin Missed Briefing, Caused Swine Flu.” But it wasn’t. Instead The Times titled the article Palin’s Long March to a Short-Notice Resignation.
Not much new in the article, except this:
In mid-spring, as the country grew alarmed over the swine flu, Ms. Palin skipped a briefing for administration officials on the outbreak by her chief medical officer, Dr. Jay C. Butler. A spokeswoman, Sharon Leighow, noted that the teleconference took place about a month before the first case of the flu was reported in Alaska and that at the time the governor was meeting with top staff on the issue of federal stimulus funds. Since then, the state has had 122 confirmed cases of the H1N1 flu.
Notice how seamlessly The Times moves from Palin missing a briefing on swine flu, to Alaska now having 122 confirmed cases. No direct accusation of anything, just subtle innuendo that somehow Palin’s missing the briefing had some relationship to the outbreak in Alaska.
Making such an accusation would be laughable, but innuendo, well that’s what passes for hard news and investigative journalism.

Yesterday the Florida troll showed up and posted a nasty comment about Levi and Sunny. I deleted it as soon as I could and the responses to it. BTW it came from Niceville (how appropriate, snark) Florida.
I ask everyone to please just ignore her. I don't monitor my blog everyday as I have a full time job (something the troll and the Palins know nothing about) so it could be several hours before I have time to delete.
I really don't want to put comments in moderation mode as it could be a while before I have time to go through them. I also don't want to add CAPTCHA either as it can be a nuisance for readers who do not have a Google account.
So I ask, please do not respond to the troll Troll comments are like bugs, you have to exterminate them and I will exterminate them as soon as I can, I promise.
Looking ugly as usual, Sarah tries to deflect attention from the brawl (when the audio tape was released October 21) by bashing a member of her own sex on Fox News with Sean Hannity. Epic fail.

As an Alaskan, a mother, and first lady who cares deeply about our families and our future, I was disturbed to learn about the very serious problems in the Alaska National Guard.
We’re all deeply concerned about the revelations of wrong-doing coming from the guard -- for the victims, for the men and women of the rank-and-file, and for our state. The terrible actions of a few, with the failure we’ve seen within the guard’s top ranks, are unforgivable. Our guard members and their families do incredible work on behalf of Alaskans, and they deserve better.
I was with my husband, Sean, when he got the call in February with concrete information that called the Alaska guard command into question. Sean immediately called the National Guard Bureau’s Office of Complex Investigations (OCI).
Sean was very frustrated, but I saw grim determination, too. The report he received on the phone that day was in sharp contrast to what he was being told by guard leadership, and my husband was committed to getting to the bottom of this.
I am thankful that the bureau’s OCI responded so quickly and so professionally when my husband called for this independent, outside investigation. The insinuation by some that Sean would not take action is wrong. That is not who my husband is, and that’s not what I have seen him do. He took action, immediately, every time. When he got the facts, he acted. With every specific allegation of assault, he followed up personally.
I’m saddened these issues have turned so political; this is unfortunate for Alaskans and for the victims. It’s a disservice to the men and women who wear the uniform of the guard.
Ultimately, Sean is consistently trustworthy. He makes decisions in a steady and stable fashion, always looking out for others before himself. More importantly, he does not make politically motivated decisions as governor. Releasing the bureau report roughly two months before an election proves this. He has the conviction to get to the bottom of this and will see it through until every crime that has been committed is prosecuted, and an accountable command structure is restored.
Above all, it’s so important to him to respect the service of our guard members.The good men and women of the guard serve and sacrifice for our safety and security. My husband is committed to protecting the integrity of their mission, and ensuring they can carry out their work for all Alaskans in an atmosphere that is safe, with accountable leadership.

October 23, 2014 Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin spent the early part of the 2014 midterms traveling the country endorsing conservative candidates in Republican primary races, hoping to leave her mark on the future of the GOP.
But on Wednesday, Palin rebuked her Republican successor in her home state, endorsing independent gubernatorial candidate Bill Walker, who is running on a "unity ticket" with Democratic running mate Byron Mallott, instead. Palin's endorsement goes against her former lieutenant governor, Gov. Sean Parnell, who assumed office in 2009 when Palin abruptly resigned and is embroiled in a highly contested race for reelection to a second full term.
Palin offered the endorsement at a campaign reception in her Wasilla home, according to apress release issued by Walker.
Parnell's 2013 restructuring of the state's oil and gas taxes dismantled a prior, Palin-championed program that she considered to be one of the greatest achievements of her tenure. That difference of opinion is at the heart of Palin's conflict with Parnell, which resulted in the two campaigning on opposite sides of a ballot measure in this year's primary.
Parnell dismantled Palin's oil-tax increase, called ACES (short for Alaska's Clear and Equitable Share), by signing a repeal of some oil taxes in 2013 that was intended to curb the state's production decline. But many fear the measure will severely diminish the revenue brought in by the state, where oil and gas taxes have accounted for as much as 90 percent of government funds.
Palin backed an initiative to repeal the new law, SB 21, when it appeared on the August primary ballot, which put her at odds with Parnell. (Palin accused Parnell of being "suckered" by "crony capitalists" at the time.) The referendum narrowly failed, garnering 47 percent of the vote as the state's Republican U.S. Senate primary attracted conservative voters to the polls. According to the Walker release, Palin offered her endorsement because she "trust[s] them to develop our God-given resources responsibly and to the maximum benefit of Alaskans."
Walker merged his ticket with Mallott in early September, and polls have since shown the race to be a toss-up. It's unclear, however, how big an impact a Palin endorsement will have on the race. The former governor's local approval ratings have been in decline since she left office.
Hoohah knows her endorsements are the kiss of death so she is endorsing someone she hates. I still endorse Walker and Mallott.

I understand that the CNN host who laughed at my daughter describing her assault has issued an apology to Politico. (Why Politico needs an apology is anyone’s guess. No one at CNN contacted my family regarding an apology, in case you were wondering. CNN contacts us directly on a regular basis with inquiries and requests for comment, so it’s not for lack of contact information that they didn't reach out. But perhaps Carol Costello should phone Martin Bashir. He knows how to reach us.)
What happened on the night in question wasn’t funny. It was humiliating and frightening. The broken ribs, black eyes, and messed up elbows and knees suffered by people in our party that night were no laughing matter. Neither were Bristol’s bruises on her arms and leg from being dragged by a man. My kids aren’t proud of what happened, nor are they seeking sympathy by playing the victim card – that’s why they haven’t commented on this for all these weeks. Instead, they had to have faith that the truth would come out, despite those who did the cold-cocking actually using social media to brag, “’bout to get famous!” Screen shots of tweets captured their bold intentions, and they’ve certainly enjoyed the publicity.
Looking at the reports, it strikes me as bitterly ironic that the same people who tell us there is a “war on women” have no problem laughing at the recording of my daughter crying as she tells police about being assaulted by a man. I’d like to say shame on the media and those on the left laughing at her or at any young woman in a similar situation, but I no longer think they have any shame.
Now Todd and I are headed to an exciting middle school girl’s basketball game along with dozens of other families proud to cheer on their daughters.

I thought I'd seen it all, but this one leaves me with that punch-in-the-gut, flabbergasted shock that I can't shake anymore while witnessing the media's free fall into that damaging darkness covering America. The media is at fault for so many aspects of the division and hopelessness running rampant in our society. It's not the people – it's the media perpetuating a sense of injustice and despair, resulting in apathy or desperation in homes and communities all across our country. The degradation falls on your shoulders, media principals. Though many have tried to give CNN the benefit of the doubt with their overall news coverage (in fact I've even been happy to publicly point out issues CNN has fairly covered), shame on us if we continue to support their unprofessional, hypocritical, and unethical news coverage. This example makes me physically sick because they spit in the face of every American who has fought for freedom and sacrificed to protect everyone's First Amendment rights. It's not because this issue involves my daughter; it's because Carol Costello, her ilk, and her boss are disgustingly dismissive and disrespectful of the sacrifices made that allow them a platform from which to broadcast their hate and stupidity. CNN is lucky to have their few outstanding employees that shine through the darkness that is CNN. I admire the good ones, and hope they land at more deserving companies when CNN goes under. Zucker, not for my sake, but for the sake of a cornerstone of our democracy—the press—get ahold of your underlings. They make you look really, really bad, and they are ruining America.

(Newsmax) – President Barack Obama is to blame for the arrival of the first case of Ebola in New York City because of his persistent refusal to ban incoming flights from West Africa, Republicans say.
The reaction comes one day after an American doctor, Craig Spencer, was diagnosed with the virus after returning from Guinea, where he was providing care for patients afflicted by the outbreak.
“This was avoidable. President Obama and Governor Cuomo left JFK airport open to passengers arriving from Ebola-stricken nations even though they knew the likelihood of an Ebola case arriving here was great. Somehow political correctness was deemed more important than public safety,” said New York Republican gubernatorial candidate Rob Astorino, according to USA Today.

So two U.S. senators, a Republican and a Democrat, are marooned for a week on a deserted island.. . .
Sounds like a lead-in to a political joke, right? Well, it actually happened. We know, because we are those two senators.
Why did we do it? Why on earth would we travel halfway around the world on our own dime, only to be dropped into the ocean, where we had to swim through shark-infested waters to an uninhabited island, surviving for a week with little more than a machete and the shirts on our backs?
Was it just to get away from it all? There’s plenty of solitude to be had in remote corners of our home states. Was it the allure of an exotic locale? The Marshall Islands are beautiful, but there were no beach chairs or cold drinks where we were.
No, our motivation for taking this extreme measure — filmed by the Discovery Channel for a survival show to be aired Oct. 29 — was the deep, structural dysfunction of the U.S. Senate. We wanted to demonstrate that a Republican senator and a Democratic senator could survive together on a deserted island without retreating to separate red and blue lagoons.
We both know that the Senate, by any objective measure, is broken. It has been years since it passed even one appropriations bill before the end of the fiscal year. Democrats point out that Republicans have filibustered nearly every piece of legislation this session. Republicans counter that Democrats have shut down what was once an open amendment process. The result? We’re on track to have one of the least productive sessions in more than half a century.
Some of the blame can be placed on extreme ideology, encouraged by outside groups bearing score cards and inflamed by cable television and social media. But an even bigger issue is a lack of trust between the parties.
Trust is built when senators know one another. That used to be commonplace. Before the “commuter Congress,” senators and their spouses broke bread in each other’s homes, and in such a setting the concept of party was more verb than noun. Senators didn’t necessarily agree more often then, but they were much better at finding paths forward where both sides could achieve some measure of victory. While we cannot turn back the clock, we must find a way to provide opportunities to forge more productive relationships.
We have a modest proposal, one that doesn’t involve an island and a machete. Currently during a typical workweek, Republicans and Democrats have two or three lunches with the members of their own party, but there are no routine bipartisan events. Those of us who are serving our first six-year term (that includes 45 of the 100 sitting senators) are especially puzzled as to how this came about, and many of us believe it has to change. Meeting as a body at least once a week would be optimal, but scheduling one bipartisan lunch a month would be a good start. We are now petitioning our colleagues to try to make this happen.
The midterm elections may or may not change the Senate majority, but whoever is in control will have a slim margin. What will not change is the necessity for the parties to work together if the Senate is to function again.

When news trickled out about the Palins being involved in a drunken brawl, I was mildly amused. The narrative was that this band of rich hillbillies was at it again. Then I saw this disturbing quote from Bristol Palin (being questioned about the incident):
“I walk back up. “Did you push my sister?” And some guy gets up, pushes me down on the grass, drags me across the grass. “You slut, you fucking cunt, you fucking this.” I get back up, he pushes me down on the grass again. And I have my five year old, they took my $300 sunglasses, they took my fucking shoes, and I’m just left here?
IF this is true (and we may never know for sure, but she sounds sincere), then Bristol Palin was physically, verbally — and possibly even sexually – assaulted by a man.“A guy comes out of nowhere and pushes me on the ground, takes me by my feet, in my dress—in my thong dress, in front of everybody—”Come on you cunt, get the fuck out of here, come on you slut, get the fuck out of here.” I don’t know this guy.”

Now, maybe it’s a bad idea to go to these sorts of parties, and maybe it’s a bad idea to bring your five-year old to them. On the other hand, maybe it’s a bad idea to blame the victim. Anyone who is concerned about a “war on women” — but not disturbed by this report — is clearly biased.

First, the media said Trig was not really my mom’s kid.
Then, they claimed my mom said “I can see Russia from my house.”
Recently, they said my parents are giving a divorce.
And now, they’re saying my family started a “drunken brawl.”
Most of the time, I let the lies pass. After all, the truth eventually comes out. But when people are selling “scoop,” photos, and false information… sometimes the truth just isn’t as profitable.
That’s why, after a month and a half of hearing rumors about myself and family, I’ve finally decided to comment about the situation. Instead of listening to all the people who weren’t there — people who claim they heard this from their cousin/brother/sister-in-law/step-daughter/long lost little brother – let me tell you what actually happened.
Our friend got knocked out from a cheap shot from behind. (His injury resulted in ten stitches, so it was really low.)
Why would anyone do this? Well, here’s a hint. The guy was on social media during this incident, tweeting, “about to get famous.”
When Willow saw all this happening she looked at the guy’s mom and said “get ahold of your son.”
But apparently the apple didn’t fall too far from the tree, because his mom pushed Willow. A grown woman pushed my little sister.
By this point, I’d already gotten into the car. But when Willow ran to me crying, telling me that some lady had pushed her down, I got out of the car to go talk to her. Any big sister would do this.
Next to God, family is the most important thing to me. In fact, that day, we’d had a surprise party for my dad. We all secretly gathered in garage and yelled “surprise!” when he walked in. The real surprise was that we’d gotten him a truck too.
But the evening that began so well took a turn for the worse when this guy decided he wanted to “get famous.”
After I got out of the car, I didn’t get far. I never even got to talk to his mom, because a guy in his late thirties or early forties got in my face. He was towering over me – probably at 6 foot something and over 200 pounds. He puffed his chest out and started yelling.
“You c-nt!” he looked right in my eyes and said. “Get the f-ck out of here, you slut!”
I was alarmed that things had gotten so bad so fast. But it got even worse when this guy started pushing me. He had his hands on me, pushing me down. That’s when I swung and hit his face.
Some would say I should’ve never retaliated in defense against him, but certainly he should never have pushed a girl. It didn’t phase him. He pushed me down to the ground and kept me there.
It was scary and awful. He held me down until someone got me out of the situation.
That’s it – that’s the story.
I didn’t “swing and hit him seven times with a strong right hook” as so many so-called news stories have reported. After this incident, I still had a perfect manicure on all ten of my nails. Plus – I’m left handed. I wouldn’t even begin to know how to begin “swinging” at someone.
The incident was scary and infuriating. I had bruises all over me from being pushed down.
This is what I don’t understand. I have mostly stayed out of the public eye for the past few years. I clock in and out of work – yes I actually have a job – like most middle class Americans and chip away at making my son’s life just a little bit easier. So why does the media still choose to put the Palins into an entirely different category of people? This “story” is still running over a month and a half later. Rumors still run wild, unsubstantiated claims are printed as true, and random people who weren’t even there are considered “eye witnesses.”
In the meantime, did you even hear about Vice President Joe Biden’s adult son who kicked out of the Navy for cocaine? (That’s the real Vice President’s kid…) So pause for a moment and consider the hysteria over our stupid “incident”, compared to our actual Vice President’s son not even being able to hold on to a position in the Navy Reserve.
I’m sure you heard the happy news that Chelsea Clinton had a baby. But did you know her father-in-law and Clinton family pal Edward Mezvinsky is a convicted felon because of committing bank, wire, and mail fraud?
Of course, you didn’t. Because the friends and family of the revered liberal elite are treated like delicate China. Don’t handle too roughly. They are precious. They are off limits. Don’t push on them too hard.
In the meantime, I was pushed and held down by some guy… and the media salivates like a dog that’s just been given a bone.
Here’s the thing. Violence against women is never okay… Even if that violence occurs against conservative women. According to a new report from POLITICO, Rep.Michele Bachmann (R-MN) has been given a special security detail due to personal threats she has received from the Islamic terrorist network ISIS. While information about both the nature of the threat and the detail are scant, multiple law enforcement sources told the site that a specific online threat against Bachmann led Capitol Police to give her protection that is set to last until she retires from Congress at the end of this term.
Bachmann has been one of Congress’ loudest critical voices of both ISIS and Islam in general. During her speech at the Values Voter Summit in September, Bachmann described ISIS’ mission as “spiritual warfare.”
Her prescription for the U.S.? “You kill their leader. You kill their council. You kill their army until they wave the white flag of surrender.”
I absolutely don't wish any harm upon Crazy Shelly, but she brought this upon herself. I am literally counting the days until she stops representing Minnesota. Personally I think District 6 should be forced to secede from the Great State of Minnesota and stop embarrassing the rest of us.

Longtime Alaska Rep. Don Young improperly used campaign funds for personal use, accepted “impermissible” gifts and failed to report those gifts, the House Ethics Committee announced Friday.
Young, a Republican, has to repay nearly $60,000 to his campaign, and donors, the Ethics Committee said. He has also been reproved by the committee.
The Ethics Committee said that Young, who has represented Alaska in the House since 1973, accepted improper “gifts and expenses related to” 15 hunting trips. The trips occurred between 2001 and 2013, the Ethics Committee said.
Eight trips that Young took were improperly paid for, or were paid for by his campaign improperly. Young also did not disclose any of these gifts on his financial disclosure.
There are relatively stringent rules dictating gifts members of Congress can receive, and how a member of Congress can use his campaign funds. Members of Congress cannot accept gifts from entities that employ lobbyists, and can only accept gifts that are worth less than $50. All gifts must be disclosed.
Members of Congress cannot use campaign money for their own use.

'That Was Sarah Palin'
In one of the recordings, a witness could be heard talking to an officer about the fights that night. At one point the man paused, and wanted to make sure the officer knew the severity of the situation.
"The lady that came up with the glasses," the man said. "That was Sarah Palin."
The cop let out an audible sigh, and said, "Okay."
"I know. Nice evening," the man said.
"Yeah," the officer said. "Sounds like it."
'Such A God Thing'
Another of the audio recordings began with the sounds of shouting and general chaos. Amid it all, Sarah Palin could be heard pretty clearly talking about a necklace that belonged to her son, Track Palin, which they thought had been lost forever during the altercations.
"Did you find your necklace?" Sarah Palin said. "Track, that is such a God thing. See?"
"Track, that went to Iraq and Afghanistan," Palin continued. "Let me see it. I can't believe you found it. Let me put it in my pocket."
As yelling and chatter continued all around, Palin kept focused on one thing.
"He found his necklace," Palin said. "He found his St. George."
'Our Side'
Yet another audio recording began with yelling, cursing and the sound of a child crying. Sarah Palin's voice could be heard briefly urging her son, Track Palin, to cooperate.
Quickly another woman's voice could be heard.
"Stop," the woman said. "Let's get them on our side. Okay?"
'Basically A Gay Guy, But He's Not'
Soon after in the same audio, an officer could be heard escorting Track Palin to a quieter area so that they could talk. From the sound of it, his father, Todd Palin, was by his side.
Track began to explain to the officer how his father's 50th birthday celebration that night turned into a melee.
"Alright this is my old man," Track said. "It's his birthday, okay. So we're at this party in Wasilla. Dude, surprise him with a new truck, new trailer, new wrap on the trailer. Everything was fucking kosher."
As he described what happened, Todd Palin interjected periodically. Both Track and Todd agreed that the fighting started when "a father-son team" punched their friend, "Steve."
"He's like a little pussy you know what I'm saying?" Track said, referring to Steve. "Like he's not gonna fight nobody. … Most innocent, basically a gay guy, but he's not."
'P-A-L-I-M-O'
At one point in the audio, an officer asked Track Palin for his name. Track began to comply, spelling it out in the phonetic alphabet often used by members of law enforcement and the military.
"Track," he said. "T-R-Tango, Romeo, Alfa, Charlie, Kilo."
But when it came to spelling his last name, Track became a little more dodgy.
"Papa, Alfa, Lima, India, Mike, Oscar," Track Palin said, spelling P-A-L-I-M-O. "You know what that means? Like I mean --"
"Palimo?" the officer asked.
"What?" Track said. "No. See he didn't know what --"
That's when his father interrupted.
"This is not a time to be joking," Todd Palin said. "It's Palin."
"I'm not trying to be a dick, man," Track said later. "I'm sorry. I just seen a lotta' shows on cops."

"Can we talk in here because I have my 5-year-old in here asleep?" Bristol said, before beginning to tell her version of what happened.
"I don't know who Korey is," she said. "Korey pushed me on the ground and took me by my legs and dragged me across the lawn calling me a 'cunt' and calling me a 'slut.' I don't know Korey. I don't know Korey."
The police officer then took photos of Bristol's injuries.
"I don't want my face in a picture right now," she said. "There's nothing on my face except for beer and makeup."

A confidential military report sheds further light on rampant misdeeds within the Alaska National Guard.
A former pornography company owner and co-founder of an “end times” fundamentalist group who joined the Alaska National Guard in 2003 is now the guard’s Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations and Training, despite military investigators finding him directly responsible for empowering Alaska guard recruiters to sexually assault and harass female soldiers, recruits and civilians.
Lt. Col. Joseph R. Lawendowski, 46, was recommended for “other than honorable” discharge in a confidential report that military investigators submitted to high-ranking Alaska National Guard officers on March 3 of this year. The findings of this “AR 15-6” report were not released to the public. (AR 15-6 refers to Army Regulation 15-6, covering the investigation of misconduct by officers.)
The March 3 report finds that Lawendowski failed to act on multiple complaints of serious misconduct, including sexual assault, against four senior noncommissioned officers under his command. The report covers the period from November 2007 to May 2012 when Lawendowski was commander of the Alaska Army National Guard Recruiting and Retention Battalion (RRB).
The four noncommissioned officers, or NCOs, are identified in the AR 15-6 report as Command Sergeant Major Brown, Master Sergeant Carson, Master Sergeant Nieves, and Sergeant First Class Tallant. National Guard investigators found that Lawendowski created a workplace climate of fear, intimidation and special treatment that emboldened those four NCOs to feel above the law, and that he was derelict in his duties by allowing the NCOs to retaliate against soldiers in the battalion who filed complaints.
The investigators also found that Lawendowski had condoned and furthered illegal steroid use by RRB personnel, and had violated National Guard codes of conduct on multiple occasions. These included using government vehicles for outings to strip clubs, and Lawendowski being publicly intoxicated at the 2012 Iron Dog Race after-party. (Lawendowski arranged for the Alaska National Guard to become the presenting sponsor of the Iron Dog snowmobile race beginning in 2010. According to the AR 15-6 report, he improperly exchanged more than 10,000 text messages with a female Iron Dog employee during sponsorship negotiations in April and May 2010.)
Furthermore, the March 3 report cites numerous suspect credit card purchases made by Lawendowski using government-issued credit cards. It recommends the National Guard open a separate investigation of Lawendowski for misuse of government funds.
The Press has obtained US Bank transaction records for Lawendowski’s government-issued credit card during the period in question. Purchases include plane tickets to Dubai and Sweden, payments to a luxury children’s clothing store in Paris, and $1,500 and $2,000 bar tabs in Anchorage and Juneau.
And the shit is getting deeper too:Military investigation reports obtained by the Press detail rampant sexual misconduct beginning in 2007 by three Alaska Army National Guard recruiters whose joint nickname was “The Three-Headed Monster.”
The reports provide in-depth accounts of four sexual assaults and numerous cases of sexual harassment targeting fellow soldiers, new recruits, and civilian women, including high school JROTC cadets.
One National Guard investigation found that a recruiter sexually assaulted a civilian victim in late December 2010, more than a month after three military chaplains have said they personally warned Governor Sean Parnell that Guard officers were covering up rapes committed by recruiters.
The AR 15-6 investigation reports identify the three recruiters known as The Three Headed Monster as Sgt. Jarrett Carson, Master Sgt. John Nieves, and Sgt. 1st Class Shannon Tallant. (AR 15-6 refers to the military code for investigations of misconduct by officers.)
The reports, which have not been released to the public, were submitted to Alaska National Guard leaders in December 2013.

A former Alaska National Guard member said he blew the whistle to his chain of command more than seven years before the federal Department of Defense's Office of Complex Investigations issued a report in September detailing allegations of sexual assault, abuse of power and cover-ups.
Lt. Col. Kenneth Blaylock spent nearly 30 years with the Alaska Army National Guard.
"The people there become your family," he said.
During that time, he headed up the recruiting and retention division. According to the OCI report, the division had a "high level of misconduct occurring within the Recruiting and Retention Command 2008-2009."
"What I found out is we were paying for products more than once," Blaylock said. "We only had one product for advertising, and yet we were paying for it more than twice. The money was going somewhere it didn't need to go to."
Blaylock said in 2007, he alerted Catherine Jorgensen, who was then the Guard's deputy chief of staff and personnel, and Gen. Tom Katkus, before he was promoted to adjutant general, that he was suspicious of soldiers using money from the recruiting and retention account.
When asked to comment on the Guard's policy on credit card charges, a Guard spokesperson sent this statement:
"We are redirecting our efforts from looking into anonymous and/or unsubstantiated claims that lack detail, and that we are unable to verify," wrote Lt. Col. Candis Olmstead. "There are a broad range of requests, and we feel it is counterproductive to address these allegations and claims stemming from individual complaints. Our priority is to focus on the way forward and to work on developing and communicating plans to correct past issues."
After raising concerns to his chain of command, Blaylock said he was reassigned to another unit.
He also began hearing from fellow Guardsmen and Guardswomen about other problems.
"When the first sexual assault victims started talking to me, it wasn't like they were just coming forward, saying they had been raped," Blaylock said. "It wasn't like they said, 'Hey, sir, I've been raped.' They were just talking. They wanted to talk and tell someone about it. They would tell me bits and pieces, but never quite get to the point. When I finally went back and there were four of them one right after the other, I confronted them, just asked them: 'Were you raped?' They said yes. And I said, 'Was it by someone in the National Guard?' (They said) 'Yes.'"
"Many of them told me they had tried to talk to law enforcement in the past and nothing had happened," said Blaylock.
His chain of command failed to act, so in 2010, Blaylock went outside the Guard. He compiled a summary of concerns and submitted it to the governor's office and Anchorage police.
Blaylock said his concerns were never taken seriously until he met with investigators with the Department of Defense National Guard Bureau.
"I was labeled a crackpot by General Katkus," Blaylock said. "Essentially, anything I tried to bring forward after that was muddied because my name was attached to it. I had a lot of people who basically wouldn't talk to me, including in law enforcement."
In 2012, Blaylock said he was told to leave the Guard.
"Gen. Katkus held a special board and had a bunch of packets reviewed, where three whistle-blowers were essentially retired forced into retirement," he said.
Blaylock said he will continue to speak out in hopes that shedding light on these issues will change the culture within the National Guard, the place he called home for 30 years.
